ChatGPT’s New Canvas Interface Will Help You Write and Code Better

Open AI has announced “Canvas” for ChatGPT, a new interface that lets you collaborate better with projects that require revisions and edits. When using Canvas, a separate window will open on ChatGPT that allows you to refine your ideas side by side. Canvas is currently in beta mode and is rolling out on GPT-4o to Chat GPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users globally. The feature will be available to free users when it is out of beta.

“With canvas, ChatGPT can better understand the context of what you’re trying to accomplish,” OpenAI announced in a news post. “You can highlight specific sections to indicate exactly what you want ChatGPT to focus on. Like a copy editor or code reviewer, it can give inline feedback and suggestions with the entire project in mind.”

“You control the project in canvas. You can directly edit text or code. There’s a menu of shortcuts for you to ask ChatGPT to adjust writing length, debug your code, and quickly perform other useful actions. You can also restore previous versions of your work by using the back button in canvas.”

Canvas on ChatGPT

OpenAI says Canvas will automatically open up in a separate window when ChatGPT detects it is needed. Users could also call out Canvas manually by adding “use canvas” in their prompts.

Before Canvas, users would need to enter several inputs to refine the answers from ChatGPT. This can be a tedious process and it is difficult to follow along sometimes if a lot of input is required for the same topic in a chat. With Canvas, writing and getting the desired answer is much more smoother. Canvas comes with shortcuts that let you quickly suggest edits, adjust the length of replies, change the reading level, and add final polishing, and relevant emojis for emphasis. The feature also takes coding in ChatGPT to a new level. There are now shortcuts to review codes, add logs, and comments, fix bugs, and port your codes to a new language.

Canvas represents a major update for OpenAI and it is the first change to ChatGPT’s visual interface since it was launched two years ago. The company says it plans to “rapidly improve its capabilities.”
