OpenAI Announces GPT-4o, Its New Flagship Model That is Free for All Users

GPT-4o

OpenAI on Monday announced its most powerful and most advanced flagship model yet, the GPT-4o. The new model can accept input in any combination of text, audio, and image, and give back an output in any of the three combinations. The company calls it a step towards “much more natural human-computer interaction.” The new model is available for free to all ChatGPT users but Plus users will enjoy five times the capacity of free users, while Team and Enterprise users will have “even higher limits.”

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-4o to ChatGPT Plus and Teams users, with Enterprise availability to follow soon. The new flagship model is also rolling out to free ChatGPT users but with usage limits. Free users will have a limit on the number of requests they can make with GPT-4o based on usage and demand. The company says that when the limit is reached, ChatGPT will automatically switch to the GPT-3.5 model.

In a blog post, the company explains that GPT-4o can respond to audio outputs in just 232 milliseconds, with an average time of 320 milliseconds, similar to human response time in a conversation. With GPT-4o, users can take a picture of a menu in a different language and get it translated, even learning more about the food’s history. Users can now get translations in more than 50 languages.

As part of the demo for GPT-4o, ChatGPT will be getting a powerful female voice assistant that can interact with humans in real-time. The voice assistant is capable of reading facial expressions and translating spoken languages in real-time.

As part of the announcement, Chat GPT is getting a new desktop app for macOS “that is designed to integrate seamlessly into anything you’re doing on your computer.” On Mac, hitting the Option+Space keyboard shortcut will let you instantly ask ChatGPT a question. The desktop app is rolling out to Plus users, and a broader availability is expected “in the coming weeks.” The company says it plans to release a Windows version later in the year. According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is close to reaching an agreement with ChatGPT to bring its artificial intelligence features to the iPhone.
