Netflix to Bring Vertical Videos to its App in a Major Redesign

Netflix is working on a major redesign of its mobile app, which would see it integrate vertical videos later in 2026. The redesign is part of a larger strategy to improve content discovery and daily engagement as the company begins to make a significant push into video podcasts, TechCrunch reports.

During its earnings call on Tuesday, co-CEO Greg Peters said the mobile app redesign is aimed at better serving “the expansion of our business over the decade to come.” Netflix has been experimenting with vertical video feeds since May, where it displays short clips from shows and movies in a format similar to Instagram reels and TikTok.

Last week, Netflix released its first original video podcasts, including shows from comedian Pete Davidson and sports commentator Michael Irvin. “You can imagine us bringing more clips based on new content types, like video podcasts,” Peters mentioned during the earnings call. The streaming giant is also offering to host other shows from The Ringer and the Bill Simmons podcast.

During the earnings call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized that the streaming industry is no longer competing with one another but with the entire entertainment industry.

“There’s never been more competition for creators, for consumer attention, for advertising and subscription dollars, the competitive lines around TV consumption are already blurring,” Sarandos said. “TV is not what we grew up on. TV is now just about everything. The Oscars and the NFL are on YouTube…Apple’s competing for Emmys and Oscars, and Instagram is coming next.”

Despite increased competition from other streaming services and YouTube, Netflix saw its paid subscribers surpass 325 million at the end of 2025. The company also recorded $45.2 billion in revenue, including $1.5 billion in revenue from its lower-tier subscriptions.
