The release of Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed until 2026. Rockstar Games announced this in a statement shared today. The highly anticipated video will now arrive on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 26 May 2026.
“Grand Theft Auto 6 is now set to release on 26th May, 2026,” Rockstar shared on social media and its website.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.
“We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”
Since releasing a trailer in December 2023, nothing else has been shared about the game except the fall 2025 release date, which the parent company, Take-Two, narrowed down in May 2024.
Grand Theft Auto VI will take place in Vice City and feature the series’ first female protagonist, Lucia. The game is expected to be one of the biggest video game launches ever, and Rockstar promised it would be the “most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet” back in 2023 when the reveal trailer was released.
The announcement from Rockstar is good news for some publishers who didn’t want to go against a juggernaut like GTA VI with a holiday 2025 release window. Sony recently announced Ghost of Yotei, likely the biggest PlayStation launch for the year, will be released in October 2025, which means the company may have heard about the impending delay of GTVI until 2026.
GTA V remains a very popular game 11 years after its release. It was recently revealed to be the most-watched game of 2024 on Twitch.
