On Tuesday, Google announced in a YouTube video that users in the US can now change their Gmail address while retaining all their data. Users will be able to change their username once every 12 months, while the previous Gmail name remains as an alternate email address.

The feature is very straightforward. Users who have access can use the feature by navigating to their Google Account settings, and then Personal info > Email > Google Account email. There is now a new “Change Google Account email” email option that users can tap on to begin the process of changing their Gmail address.

Users will be able to sign in to all Google services using both the old and new Gmail addresses. Data will be retained across both Gmail addresses, and they will both receive the same emails.

Last December, a Hindi Google support page was spotted communicating the change of Gmail address feature, leading to speculation that Google might be rolling it out widely soon.

Google’s support page in English says the feature is “gradually rolling out to all users,” and some users may not have it yet.
