DualShock 4 Back Button attachment

We may have seen what the DualShock 5 would look like, well at least according to Sony’s latest announcement. The new DualShock 4 Back Button attachment is a customizable accessory which goes into the PS4’s gamepad headphone jack. It will be launching in the United States and Canada on January 23, 2020 for SRP $29.99 USD and $39.99 CAD respectively.

On its functionality, Sony says, “This new attachment elevates your gameplay by delivering more versatility and performance, while maintaining the comfort and feel of the DualShock 4 wireless controller you’ve come to love.”

The DualShock 4 Back Button attachment gives the PS4’s controller two extra touchpad options at the back and it can be mapped to any of the 16 button actions which can be achieved primarily with the gamepad and triggers. On its other specifications, Sony revealed:

  • Responsive Back Buttons and High-fidelity OLED Screen: The two back buttons can map up to 16 different actions such as triangle, circle, R1 and R2 to name a few and provide amazing tactile feedback, so you can jump and slide without missing a beat. The attachment also features an integrated OLED display that provides real time information around button assignments.
  • Highly Configurable: A dedicated button allows you to remap back button inputs on the fly, so you are always prepared no matter what game you’re playing. Furthermore, you can save and choose up to three different profiles for use in various games and there is also a headset pass-through for connecting any 3.5mm wired headset to the controller.
  • Developed by PlayStation: The product is tested and approved for all of your favourite PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR titles, and is built with the ergonomics of the DS4 in mind.

The timing of the availability definitely gives a hint about what the controller of the PS5 might look like. There are rumours the DualShock 4 will be compatible with the PS5. With Sony making the customizable Back Button available the same year the PS5 is launching, it means there won’t be many differences between the controllers.
