OpenAI rolled out voice conversations with ChatGPT in September but to only ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise subscribers. The company promised the feature was coming “soon” to others, and it is now being made available to free users on mobile.
To use voice chats, users must activate the feature under the ‘Settings’ menu on their mobile app. The voice capability is made possible by OpenAI’s text-to-speech model, and it can produce human-like audio. The company said it worked with professional voice actors to create different voices users can choose from. When the feature was initially rolled out, the company said there could be risks of impersonation and fraud that may arise from using the feature and that it would be limited to voice conversations only.
It has been a chaotic week for the OpenAI. The company’s board fired its CEO, Sam Altman, who led its first-ever Dev Day. The company rehired him as CEO after he had announced he was joining Microsoft. A new board is now being put in place at the company.
