ChatGPT now has a new study mode that is designed to guide students through problems instead of the usual mode that spits out direct answers to queries. On Tuesday, in a blog post, OpenAI says study mode is a “learning experience” that will “work through problems step by step” for students.
Study mode is available alongside other modes such as Deep research, Canvas, etc, and you only need to select it from the tools in ChatGPT to start using it. It is now available to ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users. ChatGPT Edu users will be getting study mode in the “next few weeks.”
“When students engage with study mode, they’re met with guiding questions that calibrate responses to their objective and skill level to help them build deeper understanding,” OpenAI shared in its announcement blog post. “Study mode is designed to be engaging and interactive, and to help students learn something, not just finish something.”
OpenAI says the custom system instructions on which study mode is built were written in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts to achieve a “core set of behaviours that support deeper learning based on scientific research.”
Instead of providing answers outright to students, the study mode is designed to guide students to understanding by questioning and engaging them. In study mode, responses are organized in easy-to-follow steps that highlight key connections between topics in an engaging manner. Based on the query made and previous chats, ChatGPT will personalise lessons for users. There are also knowledge checks, which include quizzes and open-ended questions in study mode.
In US colleges, AI cheating is on the rise, as per a publication by New York Magazine. It will be interesting to see how many will adopt study mode when they could easily toggle the feature on or off at any time.
