In a competitive streaming industry involving Netflix and Amazon, Apple TV Plus became the first streamer to win an Oscar for best picture with CODA on Sunday at the Academy Awards. The award is a significant achievement for Apple TV Plus which was launched just over three years ago.
After its premiere at the Sundance last year, Apple acquired the rights to CODA for $25 million after a bidding war, according to Variety. CODA follows the travails of Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones), the only hearing member of her family. After she discovers a passion and talent for singing, Ruby has to pursue her dreams away from her family. Kotsur and Matlin play her parents, and Daniel Durant co-stars as her brother, Leo. The movie is based on the 2014 French film “La Famille Belier,” in which most of the Deaf characters were played by hearing actors.
In addition to winning the Oscar for the coveted Best Picture, CODA’s Troy Kostur took home the Best Supporting Actor, while the writer-director Siân Heder won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. It’s a historic moment not only for Apple TV Plus as a streamer but also for Kostur who becomes the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar, and the second deaf actor ever following co-star Marlee Matlin award in 1986 for her role in Children of a Lesser God.
Netflix had several of its movies nominated for Best Picture including The Power of the Dog which director Jane Campion took home the Oscar for the Best Director category. In total, Netflix had 27 nominations for this year’s Academy Awards but it was a disappointing night for the streamer. The streamer has won multiple Oscars over the years but the highly coveted Best Picture award still eludes its grasp.
Apple CEO Tim Cook reacted to the news on Twitter calling CODA a “profoundly beautiful movie” that “celebrates our differences.” According to Variety, Apple spent more than $10 million on the Oscar campaign for the movie which is more than its entire production budget.
