Apple Announces New 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 Chip, and Support for Up to Two External Displays

Apple on Monday announced updates to its MacBook Air range. The newly announced 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air is powered by the M3 Chip bringing improved performance. The new MacBook Airs now have up to 18 hours of battery life and Apple is naming the laptop the “world’s best consumer laptop for AI.” Pre-orders are underway for the new MacBook Air with the 13-inch model starting at $1099, or $999 for education, while the 15-inch model starts at $1299, or $1199 for education. The laptops will start shipping on March 8.

In terms of performance, Apple says the new M3-powered MacBook Air is 60 percent faster than the M1 chip model, and up to 13 times faster than the fastest Intel-powered MacBook Air. Wi-Fi is now up to 2 times faster than the previous generation and the MacBook Air now supports up to two external displays when the laptop lid is closed.

In a press release, Apple is highlighting AI in its marketing, and this is made possible by a 16-core Neural Engine, with CPU and GPU boosts for on-device machine learning.

The new MacBook Airs feature Liquid Retina displays with up to 500 nits of brightness, support for up to 1 billion colours and “up to 2 times the resolution of comparable PC laptops.”

Apple is expected to unveil more new hardware this Spring including OLED iPad Pro, updated Apple Pencils and Magic Keyboards.
