X Announces Chat, its New Encrypted Messaging Service

X Chat

On Friday, X announced the rollout of its new, upgraded, and encrypted direct messaging service, Chat. The new messaging service supports file sharing, disappearing messages, voice, and video calls. It is currently rolling out on iOS and Web, while Android will come “soon.”

Chat replaces the direct messaging system, which has been available since Elon Musk took over the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. Legacy messages will be carried over to Chat, and users will still be able to access their old messages.

According to X, direct messages in Chat are fully end-to-end encrypted, but both the sender and recipient must have the latest iOS version of X and the Web version. To begin, users must register for Chat by entering the Chat tab in the dash menu or via the messages tab in the toolbar and following the subsequent instructions. While messages, links, media, and files are encrypted, X notes that the associated metadata will not be encrypted. It will also not be possible to report an encrypted chat due to its encrypted nature. X says users must file a report about the associated account itself, and its team will look into it.

Apart from the end-to-end encryption, users will be able to unsend a message after it has been sent, but the company warns that a recipient may still be able to see an encrypted message after it has been deleted. Users will also be able to send timed disappearing messages.

X first introduced encrypted DMs in 2023, but the messaging service has now been upgraded to Chat with additional features.
