OpenAI is piloting a group chat feature that lets its users collaborate with coworkers, friends, and family. The feature is rolling out on mobile and web to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscribers in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Group chats on ChatGPT work like group chats on other social media platforms. OpenAI says that conversations on group chats are kept separate from private conversations, and that users’ personal ChatGPT memory “is never shared with anyone in the chat.”

To start a group chat on ChatGPT, tap on the new people icon in the top corner of a new or existing chat. You will have the option to invite up to 20 people to the group chat. You can also share the group chat link with others so they can invite people. When you create a group chat from an existing chat, ChatGPT will make a copy of your original conversation and keep it separate from the newly created group. When you create a new group chat or join an existing, you will be prompted to setup a profile with your name, username, and photo.

Group chat responses are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, the version that chooses the best model to respond with “based on the prompt and the models available to the user that ChatGPT is responding to, based on their Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plan.” Group chats feature the same features that are available in private conversations, such as search, image, file upload, image generation, and dictation. OpenAI says, “rate limits only apply when ChatGPT responds–not to messages between users in the group chat–and responses from ChatGPT count toward the limit available of the person ChatGPT is responding to.”

Group chats on ChatGPT have new social behaviours that let it decide when to respond or keep quiet during conversations. Users can also mention “ChatGPT” intentionally to get a response from the AI. ChatGPT can react with emojis and reference profile photos in group chats for personalised and fun conversations.

OpenAI says it will gather feedback from the group chat pilot to inform its expansion to more regions and other ChatGPT plans.
