Spotify’s new Verified Badge Lets You Distinguish Real Artists from AI

In a constantly evolving landscape where music streaming platforms are being flooded with AI-generated uploads, Spotify is doing its best to stay on top of the situation by introducing new tools to distinguish humans from AI-generated artists. On Thursday, the company announced the introduction of a new “Verified by Spotify” badge that shows on an artist’s profile has been reviewed and meets its criteria for authenticity and trust.

Spotify says artists who receive the Verified badge have met the three criteria below:

  • Consistent listener activity and engagement over time: We focus our review on artist profiles that listeners are actively and intentionally seeking out over a sustained period of time, not just those experiencing one-time spikes in engagement. These criteria also make it feasible to conduct thorough reviews across millions of artist profiles.
  • Good standing with Spotify’s platform policies: This means the artist and their content comply with our platform rules.
  • Signals of a real artist represented in the profile: We look for an identifiable artist presence both on and off-platform, like concert dates, merch, and linked social accounts on their artist profile. At launch, profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification. In today’s music landscape, the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving, and we’ll continue to develop our approach over time.

Spotify says the above criteria will be combined with human review and judgment to determine authentic artists “behaving in good faith.” The new badge will be rolling out “over the coming weeks,” and it will appear on artist profiles and next to their names in search. The company says more than 99 percent of the artists listeners usually search for will be verified at launch. Smaller artists or music creators who do not have the Verified by Spotify badge at launch could still receive it in the future.

Alongside the Verified badge, the company is adding a new section to all artist profiles regardless of their verification status. The new section displays key information like career milestones, release activity, and touring activity. The new features, which are still in beta, join recently introduced features such as SongDNA, which reveals creative connections behind a song, AI credits, and Artist Profile Protection.
