Spotify on Wednesday announced the launch of the long-awaited lossless audio streaming. The feature is rolling out in select markets on mobile, desktop, tablet, and on devices that support Spotify Connect, including Bose, Sony, Samsung, Sennheiser, and many more, with support for additional devices from Sonos and Amazon arriving next month.

Spotify first announced plans to release a new HiFi high-end subscription in 2021 that would offer high-quality streaming, but it was never released. CEO Daniel Ek hinted in 2022 that the plans had hit a roadblock due to music licensing issues. With the rollout finally announced, Premium subscribers can stream music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC at no extra cost. According to Spotify, lossless audio streaming is being released in more than 50 countries through October. Premium subscribers in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK have already started getting access.

Spotify says that Premium subscribers will receive a notification on their Spotify once lossless streaming is available to them. Users will have to enable lossless manually once they have every device they have. To enable lossless on the Spotify app, tap on your profile icon; navigate to “Settings & Privacy”, and then open “Media Quality”. You will have the option to enable lossless audio on Wi-Fi streaming, cellular, or your downloads. Select whichever you prefer. When lossless streaming is enabled, you will see a new lossless indicator in the Now Playing view or bar, and via the Connect Picker.

Lossless streaming on Spotify is best enjoyed when streaming lossless music on Wi-Fi on wired headphones or speakers on a non-Bluetooth connection. It is better late than never for Spotify; its rival, Apple Music, released lossless streaming in 2021, supporting up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
