TikTok is bringing itself in line with other popular social media platforms by finally allowing users to send voice notes and images in DMs. It’s a surprise it has taken this long for TikTok to embrace voice notes and images in DMs since the feature was already available on platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter a long time ago.
TikTok users will be able to send voice messages up to 60 seconds long, and nine images or videos in one-to-one and group chats, TechCrunch reports. TikTok has become a popular platform where users go to watch videos, and a lot of Gen Z people use it for communication.

The launch of voice notes and images in DMs opens more ways to interact for users, instead of the usual video sharing and texting only. Users can take a new photo or video with their camera or select an existing one from their gallery. Pictures or videos can also be edited on TikTok before sharing in the DMs.
TechCrunch reports that users exchanging DMs for the first time cannot send an image or video for safety reasons. However, they can share existing content on TikTok as first-time messages. TikTok will also remind users to protect their privacy when sharing photos or videos.
DMs on TikTok are only available to users aged 16 and above. TikTok is also adding additional layers of protection for users between the ages of 16 and 18. “TikTok has automated systems in place to detect and block images containing nudity,” TechCrunch says. “This means that the sender will be blocked from sending the nude image, and the receiver won’t see the image at all.” Users aged 18 and above can choose to toggle on or off this feature.
Voice notes and images are rolling out on TikTok “over the next few weeks.”
