Kratos’ journey in God of War began over 20 years ago when the first game in the series debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. Now one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world, Sony has announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy, which defined gaming eras on the PS2 and PS3, is now in development for modern consoles.
The announcement was made on Thursday during Sony’s first PlayStation State of Play of 2026. In the announcement teaser, the original Kratos voice actor, TC Carson, confirmed a remake of the Greek trilogy is now in development, but cautioned that “the project is still in early stages.” In a PlayStation blog post, Sony asked for patience and added that “it will be a while before anything else can be shared.”
As celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the franchise come to a close, there was a surprise as Sony announced a new God of War Sons of Sparta developed by partner studio, Mega Cat Studios. The new game is inspired by the original God of War, and it is a “2D action platformer with a canon story set in Kratos’ youth during his harsh training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos.”
“From the writing team at Santa Monica Studio that brought you God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, Sons of Sparta is a tale of duty, honor, and brotherhood featuring TC Carson who reprises his role the first time in over a decade as the adult version of Kratos, our story’s narrator!” Sony added in a blog post.
The game is out, and it’s available for $29.99 on the PlayStation Store, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will set you back by $39.99.
