At this year’s Al Day, Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon 665 and Snapdragon 730 SoCs. The latest chipsets indicate updates to the tech company’s mid-range and upper midrange line up in the 600 and 700 series.
According to Anandtech.com, Qualcomm has focused on these segments while dropping frequent releases in recent times. The blog claims that this ” rush” is caused by the competitive nature of this product segment; hence Qualcomm’s need to use new products to dominate the market.
Now let’s look at what these new platforms and SoCs bring to the table.

Better AI Capabilities
The Snapdragon 665 comes with better AI specs. It runs on a third generation Qualcomm Al Engine, Hexagon 686 DSP and Hexagon Vector Extensions (HVX). This platform ensures better on-device imaging and computing while offering AR Translate. You can even have access to upgraded security on features such as 3D Face Unlock. In summary, the Snapdragon 665’s AI performs better than the older Snapdragon 660.
This new mobile processor has better AI features which focus on a smartphone’s camera. This allows the phone to capture better pictures via object detection; auto scene detects and smart cropping. It also offers portrait mode, low light mode and higher resolutions for well detailed night shots.
Better Angles Pictures from Every Angle
The Snapdragon 665 has dual 14-bit ISPs with AI-based Qualcomm Spectra 165 ISP which enables scene recognition and HDR in any environment. It also provides autofocus, optical zoom, and even a triple camera setup. Other supported features include 48M Snapshot and multiple lenses such as telephoto, wide and ultra.
Enhanced Gaming Performance
Since mobile gaming has taken a significant part of the gaming industry, it’s no surprise that Qualcomm has prepared the Snapdragon 665 with mobile gamers in mind. For instance, the SoC has an Adreno 610 GPU and Vulkan 1.1 which allows seamless 3D graphics on smartphones. The gaming experience is further enhanced by the integration of the Qualcomm aptX Adaptive Audio and Qualcomm Aqstic Audio Technology for high-quality audio.
Increased Connectivity and Performance
A Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem ensures speedy downloads of up to 600 MBps on the Snapdragon 665. It also provides improved Wi-Fi services. Overall, the SoC allows users to download and share content at remarkable speeds.
Looking at the CPU, there’s no significant change when compared to the Snapdragon 660. First, the Snapdragon 665 has similar 4× Kryo 260 based on Cortex A73’s cores. It even has a weaker chipset clock with 2Hz big cores and smaller 1.8GHz cores. Let’s move on to the Snapdragon 730.
Presented as a successor to 2018’s Snapdragon 710, the Snapdragon 730 receives a robust upgrade. Even if the industry expected the S730, Qualcomm announced the S675 in its place. However, this announcement came with a CPU assembly that performed better than the one found on the flagship Snapdragon 710.
However, the Snapdragon 730 handles this issue by upgrading to a “Kyro 470” CPU architecture based off Arm’s Cortex A76 CPU µarch. The cores record at 2.2GHz and include 6x Cortex A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz.
The S730 has an Adreno 618 GPU that offers about increased performance than the older model. It also has a next-gen Hexagon 668 DSP that uses the latest Tensor Accelerator units for advanced machine learning interferencing.
The mobile processor ensures better pictures via the Spectra 350 ISP with CV (computer vision) acceleration. Overall the 700 series has specs fit for a possible 800 series however at a lower price and performance level.
Interestingly, the Snapdragon 730 is the first Qualcomm mobile processor manufactured on Samsung’s latest 8nm LPP manufacturing node. We want to add that this node stands as an excellent choice.
Qualcomm intends to release a Snapdragon 730G model of the SoC which offers enhanced graphics performance.
Both the Snapdragon 665 and 730 chipsets will be available in devices from the middle of this year.
