Who buys a gaming console to rent and purchase movies? Well, not me at least, neither have I seen any of my friends done that. Anyway, Sony today announced it will no longer offer movie and TV shows purchases and rentals on the PlayStation Store from August 31, 2021.
“We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles,” Sony wrote in a post on its PlayStation blog. “With this shift in customer behaviour, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals.”
Sony says customers will still have access to the movie and TV content they’ve purchased even after the deadline removal has passed.
Sony made a redesign of the PlayStation Store with the introduction of the PS5; removing movie and TV content would make players focus more on the gaming content they are looking for.
