Known for making chipsets for smartphones, Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek today announced its MT9638 chipset for 4K TVs.

The chipset comes with a host of AI-powered features such as super resolution, picture quality and voice assistant. It supports variable refresh rate in 4K TVs which will interest gamers and there is an MEMC feature.

The chipset has a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 CPU which clocks at 1.5GHz speed. There is a dedicated AI Processing Unit (APU) and a Mali-G52 MC1 GPU which makes it possible for real-time content and scene recognition by adjusting the saturation, brightness, sharpness, and noise reduction on the go.

With the help of the AI super resolution, video contents can be upscaled to native 4K and videos become smoother thanks to the MEMC technology.

The key specifications offered by the MT9638 chipset include 4K@60fps playback with support for HEVC, VP9 and AV1. There is HDR10+ with support for up to 2304 backlight dimming zones. Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X are also supported for better audio quality. Connectivity options are HDMI 2.1a, USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi 6.

The chipset is expected to begin shipping with TVs in the second quarter of 2021.
