Nintendo Forecasts the Switch 2 Will Sell 15 million Units in Its First Fiscal Year

In its latest earnings report, Nintendo predicted that the Switch 2 would sell 15 million units in its first fiscal year ending March 2026. The figure is slightly below analyst predictions of 16.8 million console sales, but that could be due to market uncertainties such as the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

When pre-orders were opened for the Switch 2 a couple of weeks ago, the console quickly sold out across all retailers as expected. The console will launch on June 5th, which means it will already have less than a year to meet Nintendo’s forecast. The company has also predicted selling 45 million Switch 2 games within the same period. In comparison, the original Switch console sold 14.87 million units in its year (Q4 FY17 – Q3 FY18), which means Nintendo is confident about the Switch 2 console despite its higher price.

For the original Switch, hardware sales are down 31.2 per cent year-over-year, while software sales are down 22.2 per cent year-over-year. This is no surprise, as the console edges closer to the end of its lifecycle with the upcoming launch of the Switch 2. Despite this, Nintendo expects to sell 4.5 million Switch consoles and over 100 million games in the year ahead, down from 10.8 million units to 155 million games last year.

The original Switch remains one of the best-selling consoles of all time, with its total lifetime sales now at 152.12 million units, just behind the DS at 154.02 million. The number of annual Switch users has now dropped slightly from 129 million to 128 million, still an impressive figure considering the console was released more than eight years ago.

The Switch 2’s retail price is $450, but Nintendo has said the price might be increased post-launch should tariffs change “significantly.” While speaking to investors, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the priority now is to “quickly popularise the Switch 2 hardware” and focus on its immediate success, as reported by Yahoo News (translated by Genki).
