Both Sony and Microsoft have shown a host of games coming to its next-gen consoles but none has revealed the price of any game or the selling price of the next-gen consoles itself. In what might be a hint on what’s to come, Take-Two Interactive today announced NBA 2K21 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X as well on current-gen consoles. One thing that caught the eye is the price for the Standard Edition on next-gen consoles which is set at $69.99, a $10 increase from what we’ve known for most games.
Most AAA games began selling for $59.99 from the era of the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, which was also a $10 price bump from the era that preceded it. With the Standard Edition of NBA 2K21 selling for the regular $59.99 on the PS4 and Xbox One, that gives the biggest indication yet that AAA games on the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will be selling for $69.99. Next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony will feature support for 8K graphics and will have super-fast SSDs which will enable developers to take games to the next level. It’s also been reported hardware parts of upcoming next-gen consoles are expensive causing a rise in development cost. All these factors could play a part in game prices getting a bump in other to offset development cost.
When contacted by Kotaku, a PR spokesperson from Take-Two said, “We believe our suggested retail price for NBA 2K21 on next-generation platforms fairly represents the value of what’s being offered: power, speed and technology that is only possible on new hardware.” Apart from the Standard Edition, 2K Games is also offering a “Mamba Forever Edition” with deceased NBA legend, Kobe Bryant as the cover star. The special Kobe edition will retail for $99.99 on both current and next-gen consoles, it offers dual-access and “purchasing Mamba Forever Edition on either current or next-generation platforms provides a copy of the standard edition game on the other generation at no additional cost, within the same console family,” explains Take-Two.
The gaming industry is currently one of the biggest in the world and a $159.3 billion in revenue is expected to be generated in 2020 while the number is predicted to surpass $200 billion in 2023. With prices for the Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles predicted to start from $599 and AAA games going for $69.99, gaming is becoming an expensive hobby more than ever. It remains to be seen if people will afford to shell out such amount of money considering the global economic crisis and loss of employment that has taken place due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
