Only public accounts with at least 1,000 followers can now go live on Instagram, the Meta-owned platform confirmed to TechCrunch. Previously, all accounts, including private ones, could go live on Instagram regardless of their follower count, but the social media platform has now added additional eligibility requirements.
Some users with no public account and with less than 1,000 followers are already seeing a new prompt when they attempt to go live. “We changed requirements to use this feature. Only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more will be able to create live videos,” the new prompt reads.
The move is a big blow to creators who are just starting to build their audience, but it is also a motivation for them to try other creative ways to grow their following on Instagram. Regular users who do not care much for followers and private users will no longer enjoy such a privilege.
With the change, Instagram is now on par with other social media platforms in terms of eligibility to go live. TikTok also requires users to have at least 1,000 followers, while YouTube requires every channel to have at least 50 subscribers to go live.
According to TechCrunch, Instagram said it made the update “to improve the overall Live consumption experience.” Not only that, the change could also help limit lower-quality streams to audiences, and reduce the cost for Meta since hosting livestreams is expensive.
