Huawei has just launched its latest processor: the Huawei Kirin 980. The newly launched processor is technically the fastest processor, available in the market today; although, it is yet to feature on any device, as it was only recently launched.
The Kirin 980 Processor was launched during a keynote speech at the IFA 2018 show, in Berlin, Germany. The new processor not only features an extremely fast, ultra-high performance mobile processor; it also features the latest system in the area of “artificial intelligence (AI)”, which is highly captivating. As promised by Huawei, the new processor will be debuted on one of its soon to be released mobile platforms.
Basic (New) Features of Huawei Kirin 980
The Huawei’s Kirin 980 mobile processor debuts a host of high “specs” features. Notable among these are outlined below:
- World’s first 7nm mobile SoC (System on a Chip)
- The first Dual Neural processing unit (NPU)
- First Cortex A76 core
- First Mali G76 Graphics processing unit (GPU)
- The debut feature of a 1.4Gbps cat.21 modem
- A debut feature of an LPDDRX4 RAM, running at 2,133 MHz
The features above were, only a few years ago, technological impossible. The best available mobile processor, prior to the release of the Kirin 980, was the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. The Snapdragon 845 can only recognize images up to 2137 per minute; while the new Kirin 980 recognizes up to 4,500 images per minute (this is made possible with its dual NPUs).
Furthermore, the Huawei’s Kirin 980, as claimed by Huawei, is a staggering 135x faster and 88% more efficient than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. This puts the Huawei Kirin 980 at an undisputable position, as the fastest and most efficient mobile processor in the world today.
In addition, the dual NPUs of the Kirin 980 also adds real-time image processing to video and can also recognize the qualities of an image.
Another interesting feature of the Kirin 980 processor is its dual Image Signal Processor. With this feature, images processed by the Kirin 980 are characterized by better white balance, sharper imaging and more revealing image – details, when compared to other known mobile processors.
Other notable features and efficiency of the Kirin 980, compared to the Huawei 970 processor, among other high performing processors are outlined below:
- 46% increase performance increase.
- 33% decrease in latency.
- A new Wi-Fi chip for higher peak speeds.
- A new dual-frequency GPS chip for 1000% better positioning accuracy.
The Kirin 980 is a product of 3years of work, by over a 1000 team of experts. Its higher performance, of course, conversely translates to better efficiency. Hence, Huawei is definitely setting the pace, in the world of mobile technology. Close competitors should up their game, as the recently launched Kirin processor is likely to stand at the top of the log for many years.
The Huawei Kirin 980 processor will be debuted on the Huawei’s Mate 20 smartphone, which will be released in October, later this year. Once the Mate 20 is launched, you can all check it out yourself, to see if the hype is worth it. For now, keep your fingers crossed, as we are about to witness a wonder in the realm of mobile technology.
