After the cancellation of Facebook’s F8 Conference, Google’s I/O 2020, the Game’s Developers Conference and the MWC 2020, the E3 2020 annual game show is the latest event to be cancelled due to fears of the Coronavirus outbreak.
Ars Technica reports the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) who are the organizers of the Electronic Entertainment Expo will soon be announcing the cancellation. The annual video game trade show was scheduled to take place June 9 in Los Angeles but Bloomberg also reports ESA will be making an official announcement today 9:30am PT.
Game publisher, Devolver Digital who makes real-time announcement during E3 tweeted today about the cancellation urging participants to cancel their flights and hotel bookings.
Sony had already announced back in January it will be skipping the E3 2020 again this year for the second year running. Microsoft Xbox Series X is also in the works but both Sony and Microsoft will now be making independent announcements for their upcoming gaming hardware.
A notice on the official E3 website says they are monitoring the situation concerning the Coronavirus outbreak but no confirmation about the cancellation yet has been confirmed with Ars Technica.
Organizers ESA has now released an official statement on its website confirming the cancellation. It says:
“After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.
Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.
Our team will be reaching out directly to exhibitors and attendees with information about providing full refunds.
We are also exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020. Updates will be shared on E3Expo.com.
We thank everyone who shared their views on reimagining E3 this year. We look forward to bringing you E3 2021 as a reimagined event that brings fans, media, and the industry together in a showcase that celebrates the global video game industry.“
