X is rolling out a “small tweak” to boost visibility of posts among people who follow one another (mutuals), the head of product at X, Nikita Bier, shared in a post on Monday.

“We noticed this data was missing from the algo, and it made your friends appear less in your replies. This resulted in the reply section feeling more like a battleground with people you don’t recognize.”

While the change is not a massive one, it would go a long way in restoring the platform to the community it felt like before a host of changes which resulted in users seeing posts from many accounts they do not follow.

Bier added that the algorithm tweak should also “help clusters form around interests more easily, which many people have asked for.”

X had a Communities feature it launched in 2021. The goal was to have people who share the same interests connect in a dedicated space, but the feature was shut down on May 6, 2026, due to spam reports and low usage. In April, Bier shared that Communities was “used by less than 0.4% of users – yet contributed to 80% of spam reports, financial scams, and malware on X.”
