tecno camon 30 review

TECNO has unveiled the highly anticipated CAMON 30 Series, featuring the CAMON 30 Pro 5G, CAMON 30 5G, and CAMON 30.

This impressive lineup is here to redefine your smartphone experience and marks a major leap forward in smartphone imaging, design and performance.

The unique selling point of the mid-range device is the camera equipped with a 50 MP Sony IMX930 camera lens as part of a triple camera setup for the back camera and a 4K 60FPS 50MP eye tracking autofocus front camera. It also features the incredible Dolby Atmos for the first time in the lineup of CAMON’s history.

Unboxing of the CAMON 30

A simple white and blue box houses the TECNO Camon 30. Unboxing the package, we were greeted by the beautifully packaged Camon 30 device, a 45W charger, a USB Type-C cable, a protective case, a SIM card ejector pin, a user manual, and warranty information. We would have appreciated it if TECNO either added the earbuds 3 to the CAMON 30 package just like the other series or earphones.

We have had the opportunity to use the CAMON 30 basaltic dark colour variant for seven days, and in this short review, we highlight some of the impressive key specifications that make the CAMON 30 a powerful and stylish device.

Design and Build Quality

The designers working at TECNO took the Camon 30 design a step forward compared to its predecessor, the Camon 20. The sleek and slim Camon 30 has a fashionable look with its thinner bezel and helio design housing the camera.

Beyond the look, TECNO’s CAMON 30 is a lightweight phone with decent build quality for everyday use. It has a tough Corning Gorilla Glass screen to protect it from scratches and drops, a stylish and grippy vegan leather at the back that makes it comfortable to hold. We love the fact that TECNO used vegan leather, as it makes the phone feel premium and has a better grip than using plastic.

The power and volume control buttons are located on the right side for easy access. At the left hand side, you will find the SIM card and memory card tray. At the bottom is a stereo speaker, a 3.5mm audio jack, a noise-cancelling microphone and a USB type C charging port. At the top is the second stereo speaker.

The Camon 30 6.78-inch full HD+ AMOLED screen display is perfect for watching videos, gaming, and browsing on social media. It comes with a 1080 x 2436 pixel resolution to make text and photos appear crisp and clear while in use. The pixels are higher than the Camon 20 which made the images on the phone screen sharper.

We were able to use the phone screen clearly on a sunny day and in very bright conditions. The brightness is decent and pretty good indoors and outdoors to consume multimedia content.

Using the phone’s 120Hz refresh rate provided me with smoother scrolling on social media. We didn’t have to worry about eye strain during longer use as it features eye protection.

The phone’s wet-hand touch technology is something we love as the previous device used when water spills on it makes it difficult to unlock or the phone may be unresponsive. We didn’t have to look for a cloth to dry our hands before using the phone to answer calls or reply to messages.

Overall, the TECNO CAMON 30’s visual experience was amazing, as I love using phones with larger screens, smooth visuals, and rich colours.

TECNO’s choice of the MediaTek Helio G99 Ultimate Octa-Core for the CAMON 30 is an impressive upgrade compared to its predecessor.

The TECNO CAMON 30 comes with 8GB of RAM that can be extended to 16GB and up to 256GB of storage to store your photos, videos, and apps. Just like the TECNO Spark 8C with expandable virtual RAM, the CAMON 30 can also use some of its storage space (up to 8GB extra) to act like extra RAM to help in loading apps faster, multitasking or playing heavy games.

Putting the Helio G99 processor and 8GB of RAM to the test resulted in great performance, as the phone works smoothly during my daily activities without any issues.

It handles everyday tasks like calling, texting, browsing the web, and social media without much fuss. We can recommend users play some high-end games with heavy graphics, such as Call of Duty, Firefly; however, playing these games for a longer period might not give you the best gaming experience. We experienced some slowdowns with a need to adjust graphics settings or increase RAM size.

As we earlier stated, the TECNO CAMON 30 series is the first to offer Dolby Atmos sound. This feature improved the overall audio experience while playing music, movies, and games by making sounds richer, clearer, and more immersive. The phone also boasts stereo dual speakers to enhance the audio performance.

TECNO phones have a customized user interface (UI) called HiOS. CAMON 30 runs on Android 14, based on the latest HiOS version 14.0.0 which is clean, intuitive, and very easy to operate.

One of the unique features we love is the infrared (IR) remote control. It can be used for a variety of devices like TVs, cable boxes, DVD players, soundbars, and more. Other features you will find on the device are the smart panel, dark theme, security and privacy, mobile cloner, HI theme and Ella assistant.

The operating system of the phone didn’t wow us as expected, as it looked basic. Depending on you as the user, playing with a few settings and customizations can make the interface better for use.

Unlocking the device was quick and easy, with the fingerprint sensor conveniently located under the display. This worked incredibly well for us, as it felt like the device’s in-display fingerprint scanner responded promptly to our attempts.

Software performance is pretty solid overall as the HiOS version 14.0.0 optimizes the TECNO CAMON 30 for a smooth and responsive user experience.

The Camon series is one of the TECNO smartphone series that focuses on the best camera technology possible.

In 2015, the TECNO Camon C8 with a selfie camera of 5 MP was the first Camon smartphone launched. The evolution took a step forward in 2024, as the Camon 30 features the most advanced camera software and optimization ever in the Camon series.

The CAMON 30 has a triple rear camera, and a 50MP sensor on the back, which uses the latest Sony IMX930 camera, complemented by a 2MP depth sensor, an OIS steady night portrait camera, and an AI camera.

On the front, you’ll find a 50 MP selfie camera with eye-tracking autofocus. The pictures we took with the phone are crisp and clear. We captured amazing pictures of our everyday moments and posted them on social media.

The anti-shake video camera feature of the CAMON 30 enabled us to use the device easily when recording handheld or while walking or running. We were able to capture high-quality and stable videos with the phone.

Battery Life

With normal usage, the phone, which packs a 5000 mAh battery, lasts for up to two days. During heavy usage, we used it for a day and didn’t have to worry or be anxious about the battery draining before reaching home at night because of its supercharging capability.

The 45-watt charger on the phone is capable of charging the device from 0% to 70% in just 30 minutes, and it takes around 40 minutes to fully charge.

Price and availability

Comparing it to other devices in its price range, I would say the CAMON 30 is a major contender in the market in this category, as it offers good value for its price.

The Infinix Note 40 (8GB RAM + 256GB ROM), for instance, sells between 300,000 and 330,00 naira and shares similarities in battery, chipset, and screen, with a major difference in the main camera, which is 108MP. Additionally, the Redmi Note 13 (8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM) is sold for around 300,000 naira, also offering similar specifications.

Considering the current market price of the TECNO Camon 30 and attractive features such as a large AMOLED display, decent cameras, performance, and a long-lasting battery, it offers good value for money and a better alternative.

The TECNO Camon 30 is here to boost your creativity with a massive 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM (expandable to 16GB). This phone is available for purchase now at authorized TECNO stores and retailers nationwide for 273,000 Naira.

Final Verdict

Overall, the TECNO CAMON 30 seems to prioritize a sleek and stylish design with a focus on comfortable use. Its battery life is awesome with an AMOLED screen that provides an amazing display, doesn’t lag or stutter during everyday use, and offers the most intuitive software experience.

After a 7-day review, we are happy to say the exceptional CAMON 30 delivered an impressive performance. For smartphone users, especially content creators looking for the perfect smartphone with exceptional camera capabilities featuring a vastly improved AI camera, the Camon 30 is the right choice.
