Shazam Surpasses One Billion Song Matches Per Month

Shazam App

Acquired by Apple in 2018, song recognition app Shazam has now surpassed 1 billion song matches per month, Apple says. Not only does the app has more than 200 million monthly users, but it has also now tagged more than 50 billion songs monthly since it began operation in 2002.

Shazam was first an SMS-based platform before it was released for iOS in 2008 and later for Android users. Since its acquisition for $400 million in 2018, Apple has been integrating the app features into its services and operating system. Apple has a Shazam Control Center panel on iPhone a ShazamKit framework for developers in iOS 15 and Android users can now identify songs played through headphones with Shazam.

“Shazam is synonymous with magic, both for the fans getting a song recognition almost instantly, and for the artists being discovered,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Music and Beats. “With 1 billion recognitions a month, Shazam is one of the most popular music apps in the world. Today’s milestones show not only people’s love for Shazam, but also the ever-growing appetite for music discovery around the world.”

According to Apple, the most Shazamed song of all time is Dance Monkey by Tones And I, which has been 36.6 million times as of last November.  The 50 billionth Shazamed song revealed today was Mandarin pop song 框不住的愛 (不插電版) by Evangeline. The first song ever to be identified on Shazam was Jeepster by ’70s glam rockers T-Rex.

With the ShazamKit framework on iOS 15, developers will be able to use Shazam’s content library or create their own custom catalogue of audio that is recognizable.
