X Will Now Inform Users When their Posts are Shadowbanned due to Compliance

X will now let users know when visibility of their posts has been limited due to compliance with local government regulations. The company made the announcement on Monday, pointing out that the feature is an expansion of an earlier introduced transparency tool called “Under the Hood”.

Under the Hood was introduced in August, and it lets users see if any labels have been applied to their posts or account that could limit their visibility. Before the tool was released, users could sense that they had been shadowbanned due to low engagement and visibility, but there was no certain way to know without the transparency tool. Users whose account is at least a year old and have made 10 or more posts in the prior month can download a report in a JSON file that shows the aggregate stats on labels applied to their account that could have limited their visibility.

With the expansion of Under the Hood, the downloaded report will now show specific posts that were held in a certain country due to local government regulations. While X has its own policies to ensure safety on the platform for its users, there are also country-specific laws guiding against terrorism, hate speech, cyberbullying, and more.

The Under the Hood report, with expanded transparency, is available to all eligible accounts.
