WhatsApp Launches Business Directory Feature in Five Countries

After initially conducting a test among a small number of users in Brazil last year, WhatsApp is now expanding its business directory feature to the UK, Mexico, Indonesia, and Colombia. Businesses that sign up for WhatsApp for Business in these countries will appear in the directory when people search. WhatsApp is also opening the feature to small businesses in Brazil.

WhatsApp says people will be able to browse businesses by category or search for businesses by their names. In Brazil, the feature is only available on Android, but it is available on Android and iOS in other countries.

While millions of businesses in Brazil use [WhatsApp] for chat, we haven’t made it easy to discover businesses or buy from them, so people end up having to use workarounds,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement. “The ultimate goal here is to make it so you can find, message and buy from a business all in the same WhatsApp chat.”

WhatsApp is also testing in-chat payments with multiple payment partners in Brazil. The company recently launched the feature in India and says its goal is to ultimately let people make secure payments from a chat with their debit or credit card. “This seamless checkout experience will be a game-changer for people and businesses looking to buy and sell on WhatsApp without having to go to a website, open another app or pay in person,” the company revealed in a blog post.
