TECNO has already made a name for itself in the Nigerian market and with the latest TECNO CAMON 18 series, we are looking forward to one of the best mobile brands. TECNO CAMON 18 Premier is almost similar to the premium Phantom X in terms of specifications and features. However, the camera department surpasses that of the Phantom X with few upgrades.

TECNO has launched a wide portfolio of smartphones over the years, ranging from entry-level to premium smartphones but this I think is the camera phone of the year. Let me take you through the review of the TECNO CAMON 18 Premier.

Body and Design

When I unboxed the phone, I took time to admire the design of the TECNO CAMON 18 Premier.  In terms of appearance, the phone looks elegant in design and very pleasing to the eye. The review unit I got is the Polar Night colour also known as Ocean Moonlight, but it is also available in Vast Sky aka Summer Breeze.

On the right side of the phone is the volume control buttons and the power button which also serves as the fingerprint sensor. The other side at the top left is the dual Nano-SIM tray and microSD card slot. While at the lower section of the phone is the speaker grill, USB type-c charging port, 3.5mm audio jack and the mic port. At the back, the top left side houses the rear camera.

The CAMON 18 Premier display has a 6.7’Dot-in AMOLED Display with Full HD+ resolution and it has a 120 Hz refresh rate for faster scrolling. The screen resolution is 1080 x 2400 px while the brightness level goes as high as 500 nits which is sharp.

TECNO introduced a new set of camera technology to the CAMON 18 Premier which makes it the most advanced pro camera from the CAMON series.

Selfies with the Camon 18 Premier

The CAMON 18 Premier’s selling point is the stabilized gimbal camera and 60X hyper zoom. One of the features that keep the CAMON 18 Premier ahead of its competitors, is the ‘Camera’. The quality of the workmanship for the housing of the rear camera is very impressive. It has a triple Rear Camera setup with Quad-LED Flash featuring a 64MP main shooter, 12 MP Gimbal Ultra-wide camera and 8MP periscope lens. At the front, we have a 32 MP selfie camera with dual flash. The front-facing camera captures skin tone well during the day and at night.

Check out the camera performance in different environments, day and night.

Night Mode

The CAMON 18 Premier is a phone you can decide to shake anytime you want to create videos and still get the best content because of its stabilized Gimbal camera, and another advantage it offers is the 60X hyper zoom.

The video creation experience of the CAMON 18 Premier is mind-blowing because of the improved and upgraded features. With the stabilized Gimbal camera, you can capture stable videos without worrying about distortion. This is a new dimension for TECNO’s camera experience.

The smartphone is powered by a CPU Helio G96 Octa-Core processor, supported by 8GB of RAM. This phone is the first device for the African market that comes with the Helio G96 processor from Mediatek. It is a high-powered core processor ideal for multitasking. The built-in storage of TECNO CAMON 18 is 256 GB which can be expanded via a microSD card.

For Geekbench the TECNO CAMON 18 Premier has a single-core score of 515 and a multi-core score of 1766.

With the Helio G96 processor, you can browse through social media feeds, play different games, and switch between apps easily and smoothly with no lags at all. For gaming, I played Call of Duty and Mortal Kombat. The graphics were above average but it could not play at High HD graphics for Call of Duty. Overall, the phone handled gaming properly.

Lastly, during my day-to-day use, the overall performance of the TECNO CAMON 18 Premier is impressive and did not lag or stutter at all during or after testing.

The CAMON 18 ships the latest Google Android 11 out of the box and TECNO software, HiOS 8.0 which provides a five-star OS experience with new features and offers an improved and well-optimized system interface. TECNO has also removed ads on the latest software which means users can now enjoy the best user experience – this actually calls for celebration.

Swiping down from the top left side of the phone shows you the notification panel while swiping down from the right-hand side shows you your control centre. It’s a little bit confusing if you are not used to it.

At the time of our testing, the Android security updates are at the level of August 5th, 2021. TECNO has also announced that the CAMON 18 Premier will get an Android 12 update which is another positive.

For battery usage, the CAMON 18 Premier comes with a 4750mAh battery and a 33W Flash Charge which allows it to reach 50% in just 20 minutes and 100% in 65 minutes. The 4750mAh battery is charged via a USB type-c port at the bottom of the smartphone.

You can use your phone for that day with a full charge without thinking about charging your phone. The CAMON 18 premier Ultra-power saving mode gives you the option to adjust the phone performance anytime you wish to extend battery life.

The smartphone is equipped with a dual SIM card slot for Nano-SIM cards. It also features a side-mounted Fingerprint Sensor and there is a USB type-c port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, WiFi and a 4G LTE connection.

Pricing and Availability

The CAMON 18 Premier retails for 182,000 Naira and is available in TECNO stores and authorized retail outlets nationwide. If you’re lucky, You could also get a free TECNO buds 1 Bluetooth wireless earphones when purchasing the devices.

This is a smartphone that is well balanced in all departments; the camera performance, processor, battery life, design and display ticks all the boxes and there are only a few shortcomings.

The CAMON 18 Premier stands as one of the best TECNO CAMON smartphones ever produced to date but still needs improvement considering the price. The selfie camera didn’t meet my expectations because the pictures taken didn’t come out sharp. The rear camera was a bit okay but considering the 64MP camera lens it should have been better.  The stabilized gimbal camera and 60X hyper zoom worked perfectly and this is totally worth the hype. Also, the speaker needs improvement especially while playing games or watching videos.

The colour options available for the TECNO CAMON 18 Premier are a beauty to see, and for users who may not be fans of either the polar night or vast sky colours, I hear TECNO is set to release an Elegant Ceramic White variant, offering more colour options for users. I love the polar night colour though.

Overall, if you are looking for a great smartphone to buy in the market especially as a content creator, the TECNO Camon 18 Premier is one smartphone you should go for.
