It’s only natural for the PS4 to have a successor as it reaches the end of its lifespan. As expected, Sony’s next console will be named the PS5 and there have been possible leaks about Sony’s next-generation console having backwards compatibility and coming with touchscreen controllers. A recent job listing by PlayStation’s account with Sony to work on the “next generation PlayStation backbone suggests the PlayStation 5’s announcement may be near.

Sony’s online services, the PSN has also come in for a lot of criticism with server downtimes and slowdowns. Sony recently made it possible to be able to change PSN IDs but major overhaul of the PlayStation Network is expected to happen with the PS5.

The job listing recruiting for the role of a Sr. Network Operations Engineer (NetDevOps) at its Aliso Viejo, California office stated:

“As a primary member of the Network Engineering team you will be responsible for the development, support and mid to long term considerations of an advanced global IP network that adheres to the highest standards to provide robust, low latency game streaming services to PlayStation Now customers around the globe. You will help contribute to an automation first operations team (DevOps) to increase our efficiencies and ability to scale rapidly as we build the next generation PlayStation backbone.”

Another listing by Sony’s San Diego offices as discovered by GearNuke is the recruitment for the role of a Staff Software Engineer states:

“This is a high-visibility technical leadership position with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) platform engineering organization to establish a highly available, fault-tolerant, globally distributed data platform and services. The next generation data platform serves the global, fast growing PlayStation Network customer base. This key role will lead the technology transformation of the network data platform including existing and new services supporting the dramatic customer growth on the platform.”

The PS4 is already in its final phase with many limited-edition versions released already. Sony will also be skipping the annual E3 event this year with many predicting something big is coming. No doubt, all these indicates the PS5 is certainly around the corner.
