Instagram has announced the launch of “Instants,” a new feature that lets people share authentic moments with Close Friends or mutual followers. Photos shared on Instants can’t be edited, disappear after they have been viewed, and are available only for 24 hours.

The Instants app is available as a standalone app in select countries on iOS and Android, but can also be used directly from the Instagram app. Instant borrows features from other social media platforms like Snapchat and BeReal, which let people share authentic, un-edited photos in the moment.

To use Instants directly from the Instagram app, go to your inbox and tap the mini pile of photos that appear at the bottom right corner. From there, a camera opens up that lets you snap a photo in real time; no uploads from your photo gallery are allowed, and photos cannot be edited. You can add a caption to your photo and also take the same actions directly from the standalone Instants app. The Instants app uses the same login credentials as your Instagram. Close Friends and mutual followers will see Instants shared as a pile of photos in their inboxes, and they will disappear once they are viewed.

All shared Instants are stored in a private archive that only the user can see for up to a year. Instants can also be compiled from the archive into a recap and shared on Instagram Stories to followers. There is an undo button that users can quickly tap to delete an accidentally sent Instant. Instants do not allow screenshots or recording.

The app follows the same privacy and safety features that Instagram is built on, including parental supervision for Teen Accounts.

Instagram is available globally on iOS and Android and as a standalone app in select countries, including Spain and Italy.
