While Kratos and Atreus’ Norse saga was wrapped up with God of War Ragnarok, we haven’t seen the last entry yet in the popular gaming series. Developed by PlayStation Studios’ Santa Monica Studio, God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry to the God of War franchise.

While previous God of War games starred Kratos as the protagonist, Sony is focusing on Faye, aka Laufey, Kratos’ wife, in God of War Laufey. Played by the elegant Deborah Ann Woll, Laufey gets her own story as she battles through the afterlife after being laid to rest by Kratos and Atreus.

The synopsis as shared by Sony in a PlayStation blog post read: “Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.”

Sony showcased a 20-minute gameplay trailer that begins with a familiar scene from 2018’s God of War, after Faye was laid to rest. Faye wakes up in the afterlife, makes her way into an unknown territory, and is eventually captured. She enlists the help of a new jelly cube companion, frees herself, and engages a huge monster standing in her way in a boss fight as the trailer ends.

No release date has been revealed for now, but Sony says the game is “coming soon” to the PlayStation 5.

The God of War universe remains one of Sony’s biggest gaming franchises. In February, Sony announced it was working on a remake of the original God of War trilogy and also released a 2D action platformer called Sons of Sparta. A live-action adaptation of the God of War series is also in the works for Amazon’s Prime Video.
